Ceramics

I decided I would experiment a bit and do some ceramic work, I have recreated a statue of zeus but used a drawing I had done of the statue as a reference point.

I tried to give the piece the same effect I had given the drawing, giving an 'unfinished' look to it.
The piece isn't as successful as I had imagined it to be, the structure of the face lacks a realistic quality to it which gives it an unprofessional appearance. for example, the cheeks, nose and eyes don't have the same strong structure that it should, also the hair and beard didn't turn out how I had imagined it , I tried to give it a thick wavy appearance but once again it didn't  work out, it instead has the appearance of clay worms.

Hermes, Aphrodite and Athena

I have recreated an image of Hermes statue in pencil.

I am very pleased with the outcome of this image, I think the shading and composition give the main figure more depth, with the main figure being in the left corner and the strong lines on the right side of it, it almost borders the image and draws the eye to the detail in the shading.

I also did a sketch of my own version of Aphrodite birth rising from the sea.

and recreated a statue of Athena in the walker museum in Liverpool.

i took the photograph of the statue att this angle to try and capture the solemn look in her face and to try and capture the  complexity of different tones in the structure

David

The statue of David is one of the most renown pieces of sculptural art worldwide, next to the statue of liberty and the statue of Zeus at Olympia.
As I enjoy using sculptures as a reference to draw from I chose to use this and try to capture the expression on his face

I also decided to paint it from another angle

Roman Portraits

The Greek and Italian (maritally roman) people have coexisted almost symmetrically, from art to religion, the so I have used images I have found of roman portraiture sculptures.
I then used several of them to draw in my own way as a study on the similarities of the two cultures.

Hades

The brother of Zeus and Poseidon; Hades, the lord of the underworld and everything dark,
Through the media, hades has been seen as the personification of evil, a temperamental monster, although the original stories described hades as quite a fair god. Apart from his trickery of his wife Persephone, who he obtained through abduction. Hades would only show his anger if someone where to try cheat him or escape his realm of the dead.

I used a  painting of him and personalised it and added his name in ancient Greek at the bottom of the page.

Icarus

Icarus was the son of the master craftsmen Daedalus, who constructed his son a pair of wings from feathers and wax to escape from Crete, he then instructed him not to fly to close to the sun as the wax would melt, Icarus ignored this warning and his wings melted and he fell into the sea and drowned, the is now named after him, the Icarian sea.

I decided to carry on using the collage technique but in a different way then I am used to, by using the different coloured paper I have been able to use a variety of shades and tones and using white pencil to create my image.

I have incorporated the sun faintly into the background of the image and i have also added the island of Crete at the bottom of the page

other artist have depicted the story in different mediums such as painting and sculpture;

Zeus Statue

I chose to draw an image of the a statue of Zeus' head, I found the image fascinating as the way the sculpture has carved the structures hair, and the dominance portrayed in it.
I wanted to replicate it in an image in black and grey, so I used several different types of pencil with a variety of different shades to give a diverse range of shade.
I have decided to leave the image 'unfinished' as i believe finishing it would take aways its artistic appearence.

Sandro Bottcelli

Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi also known as Sandro Botticelli, was a painter during the renaissance, famously known for his work based on Christianity but also famously depicted the painting of the birth of Aphrodite (Venus), the goddess of love, beauty and pleasure.

The image shows the birth of Venus from the ocean, floating ashore after being born of the ocean and Uranus, the story depicts that Cronus castrated Uranus and threw his genitals into the ocean. the name Aphrodite means foam-arisen.

Here is another adaptation of the birth of Venus by Granger
this is an image of Cronus severing Uranus' genitals.

This image shows Aphrodite and Ares.

Collage artists

The collage I create are generally very structured, I appreciate the composition of a fairly even and neat looking piece, if a piece is too busy if van become boring and over the top. Artists who I believe also have the need to create a very tidy or well-structured piece of work are; Peter Blake, Alexander Rodchencko and Kenneth Rougeau.
